Just Living is Not Enough

Where’s the OFF button? March 31, 2008

Just had a lovely confrontation with one of my neighbors at lunch. The kind that afterward makes you want a drink, a hellova lot of chocolate or some retail therapy. ‘Makes coming back to the office to do more work seem almost impossible, unbearable even.

Can’t our bodies have an OFF button? At least can we have one for our mind’s? Man, I could really use some tuning-out… a nap sounds good too.

(Sorry for the “blank space” in this post; I’m still too urked to blog about the altercation — will do so at a later time.)

Thanks,

K

When you come home… March 31, 2008

Little purple flowers, dancing in the whispers of the wind, tickle my legs and the tops of my feet. Standing in the field, the cool breeze plays with my hair, whisping it around my face. Like a deep breath, the wind breathes through my dress — in and out with every gust.

My eyes are closed; the only constant thing I feel is the embrace of his arms wrapped around me. I feel him quietly nuzzle his chin into my neck, trying to breathe me in. He does this often, trying to get close enough to me so to inhale the aroma of my shampoo or perfume, a mix of scents he charmingly denotes as “my smell.” He tells me he sneaks whiffs of me often, doing it in such a way so I don’t notice — but I usually always do :-)

“I love this,” I say, gently squeezing his arms, which are bear-hugged across my chest.

“What?” he asks in a way that tells me he already knows the answer.

“Us,” I say, “just like this.”

It has been four months since I saw him last, during his R&R from a 15-month deployment to Iraq. His holiday leave had gotten pushed back three times until I was finally able to see him.

The Over-sized Handbag March 28, 2008

So a good friend of my recently brought up the question of BIG HANDBAGS: What with them? First of all, what do you put in them? Personally, the biggest thing in my purse is my wallet, but it doesn’t need a garbage-sized handbag to hold it. Other than that I have a compact mirror, some lip glosses (plural), my phone and my keys. What do you need a XL sized handbag for?

Well, for starters the answer is NOTHING. Big handbags, from my experience, are not really meant to hold a lot of stuff – at least that’s not why women buy them. Unless you are traveling and need to hold books and iPods and passports and things, I don’t see any purpose to lug around an over-sized pocketbook (I really think it’s the manufacturer and the designer conspiring to pull in more money, charging more for the material and labor and brainpower to expand the seems.)

This same friend also brought up another good point — BIG BAGS are not guy-friendly. For one, when you’re out on a date what are you going to want to hold onto? Your man, or a duffel bag?? Additionally, the only thing you really need to bring with you on a date is your ID (for after dinner drinks), lip gloss (reapply after some lip locking), some powder and/or cover-up [makeup], and a cell phone (in case you need to escape a disaster date). Plus, why do you want to worry about lugging around a handbag? You’ve got enough to think about with just the date itself — why not save yourself the extra hassle. Also, I think that a big purse is just ASKING for trouble…literally. I guarantee the guy you’re out with is going to ask why the hell you carry around such a big purse, to which you’re going to have to explain yourself. You either A) make up something about the joy you get out of carrying around a suitcase, and sound moronic in the process, or B) indulge him and tell him or let him see what’s inside – which could cause a problem if you have random shit in there or if you have stuff like books and iPods and what-have-you that are ridiculous to bring on a date. You’re call, ladies!!!

Regardless of everything I’ve just “blogged”, big bags are enticing. (I think it’s in a good journalist stance to present both sides of an argument.) They are usually super chic-looking and even a little ”Jackie-O”. Although I haven’t purchased a BIG BAG yet (only mid-size versions), I have some recommendations of brands I’m obsessed with lately…see the following:

1. Greenwich shoulder satchel, by Banana Republic - $228

2. Greenwich over-sized shoulder bag by Banana Republic – $278

3. Key Hole satchel, by Kenneth Cole – $338

DISCLAIMER: I can’t afford any of these bags so I have to settle for less-expensive styles and brands — which are just as fine and dandy!! The following is a handbag I just purchased last night, on sale at Macy’s for $55 by “red” (spin-off of ecko):

Thanks for listening :-) and enjoy your weekend!!!!

MRI March 28, 2008

I have my first ever MRI tomorrow. It’s at 1 o’clock and my dad and his nurse, Judith, are coming down to Miami to go to it with me. I got a referral for it from after I told my doc that I’ve had 4 or 5 migraines since January (it had been over 10 years since I had my first at age 12), in addition to the fact that my mother – who also had migraines – died from a massive hemorrhagic stroke 4 years ago. When she asked if we had ever found out why my mom had the stroke I told her they couldn’t pin it on anything in particular; besides the fact that she was a smoker, she wasn’t overweight and was quite active (having to retain the roles of both parents, as my dad has MS and can’t function or participate normally). I thought my mom probably had high blood pressure, but she had never been diagnosed and wasn’t taking medication for it. I am, however, pretty certain that she was hypertensive. Also, thyroid problems run in our family as well as “borderline” diabetes. Anyways, that’s why my doc said I might as well go get a brain scan just to be sure I don’t have anything going on “up there”.

The one thing on my mind right now is that I’m hoping I’m not clostrophobic. Really, I don’t think I am – this should be a breeze — but I’ve heard stories about people who’ve never had an MRI and get in there and freak out. Whatever, I’ll just bring in some music and relax for a about 30-40 minutes in “the tunnel” (I’ve heard its like laying in a tanning booth). Then afterward, I can take my dad and Judith out to dinner and then we can go to a movie!! That’d make my day.

Other things in the happening life of MOI: My red nail polish (applied just 2 days ago) hasn’t chipped yet :-)  Case in point, my Nail Depot manicure started chipping day 1.5 – not such a good use of $48 (plus tip), huh? Also, gotta plan more of my friends bridal shower that’s coming up next week (s’posed to get RSVPs tomorrow, just put in the cake order this afternoon).

That’s all for now! :-)

Heath Ledger’s Final Role March 27, 2008

I think Heath Ledger, and his career, went out with a bang. I believe he was in the process of filming another movie when he passed away, but his final and complete role was that of “The Joker” in the next installment of Batman starring Christian Bale. Photos were released prior to Ledger’s death and they displayed the villain remarkably; he looks crazy almost!

I pulled this image from Google but photoshopped it a bit because you couldn’t really see his face. I can’t wait to see this movie :-D

Hello world! March 27, 2008

Well I guess I can come right out and say it, if not already evident — I love blogging. That being said, I love writing of any kind: journaling, poetry- and story-writing. It’s something I’ve been doing since I was very young.

Seriously though, before you can even really start a blog you’ve got to ask yourself this question: WHAT DO I HAVE TO SAY??

A question my professors and mentors have always probed me with (in regard to my writing) is “Why should people care?” The answer to that has been one of the most invaluable things I’ve ever learned, above all.

Anyone can go out and create a blog — but it’s differnet than just venting or spewing out your daily dramas (which I have to admit I’ve done both of). Yes, those are apart of blogging but overall there needs to be a purpose.

So what’s my purpose, you ask? Well, I think I’m still trying to figure that out. For the most part, I do have something to say. Regardless of the fact that I don’t like arguing with people, nor do I enjoy political debates, I have convictions and stand by them. I’m slowly realizing I am a strong person, and I have come to understand that by the power of my words I can help and inspire people (I’ve been told this in not-so-many words). Ok, off my tiny soap box now :-)

Alright so appropriately “HELLO WORLD!” Tune back into my blog for more of my reflections on life.

Hi, World. It’s me, Katie!
